The Paper- May 1986

"Midnight Records is not your average record store. With probably the best selection of 50s and 60s rock and roll, it also claims to have the most exhaustive selection of independent labels and imports. As well as cataloging the 100,000 or so records they have on hand (send $1 to PO Box 390, NY 10011), they have moved into the creative end of the business. A compilation album of 10 of their new bands, 'Hanging Out At Midnight', includes songs by New York bands:The Tryfles, The Wind, and Woofing Cookies. 255 W. 23rd St. 675-2768." ....

ON THE ROAD-Doing the "Record Show Bop"

....J.D. and Claire from Midnight Records were wonderful hosts to Jeff Tamarkin and myself for a fascinating few hours Tuesday night, during the course of which we had a great dinner. Always suave and charming, J.D. is known to many in the record business as probably one of the busiest people on the phone in history! But actually, he's heading up a tremendous operation from his store on W. 23rd St. in the Chelsea area, with the mail-order business doing well, both wholesale and retail, and his in-depth store stock of rarities, reissues and collectibles.
After taking leave of J.D. and Claire, Jeff and I headed to Tramps to see Buster Poindexter....--John Koenig-Publisher

STATION TO STATION by ANNE CLARK
......MIDNIGHT always seems to release records in big batches. Admirers of ABSOLUTE GREY's dreamy, folksy tunes can sit back and enjoy "Painted Post". The resonant vocals are especially fine. The BACKBONES' "Static Soul" is a growling, rasping James Brown groover. For the re-living and the re-inventing of 60's garage sounds we've come to rely upon Midnight for, there are two new LPs, OUTTA PLACE's "Outta Too!" and DIMENTIA 13's "Mirror Mind". Finally, the IGUANAS 7", "Living In A Vacuum", has been re-issued and ought to be much easier to find now......

MIDNIGHT RECORDS
Midnight is another jack of all trades label a la Rough Trade-- they import and distribute records, have a retail outlet in NYC, offer mail order service, and recently started their own label to release records with a distinct neo-psychedelic/garage band orientation. In addition to releases by the CHEEPSKATES, FUZZTONES, PLAN 9, the WOOFING COOKIES, PLASTICLAND and the VIPERS, MIDNIGHT has diversified its sound somewhat with releases by ABSOLUTE GREY, HOWARD & TIM'S PAID VACATION and the WIND. MIDNIGHT's catalogs list thousands of records and contain informative articles on the garage scene throughout the world.
