FORCED EXPOSURE #12- Summer, 1987-
VIPERS- "You're Doin' It Well"/ "You Don't Believe Me"-
...this teaser for the next Vipers LP tongues the SIX-OH slot with lots less untargeted slobber than most NY outfits. An uptemped "Tobacco Road" knock-down, backed with a ballad (which makes for a move against tradition, really) and both are okay.---CU 2-(Would buy again, in quantity if I had to.)---BYRON

RATBEAT INTERNATIONAL #2-
VIPERS- "You're Doin' It Well"/ "You Don't Believe Me"-
It's been two years since OUTTA THE NEST, the album that was supposed to catapult the VIPERS into the superstar status . Don't know what the bands been doing in the time between but they've been doin' it well. This is the best piece of VIPER vinyl yet! The A-side is a stompin' poppy R&B song, incredibly catchy and tight, the B-side -- "You Don't Believe Me" is a beautiful mid-tempo Byrdy popper, catchy again and tight, too. With songwriting like this the VIPERS are ready for the big time after the two year delay. --- M

THE ISLAND EAR- JULY 27, 1987-
VIPERS- "You're Doin' It Well"/"You Don't Believe Me"-
Yeah, they've been around for awhile, and are probably nice guys, but this VERY ordinary '60's-flavored garage-rock is completely lacking in two things: originality and balls.

Fab interview with th' guys. Fave quote: "Ah! The notorious J. D. He's always treated us fairly. As a matter of fact, strangely enough - just to give you an idea of what the record labels are like, he's the most honest person we've dealt with yet. He's the only guy we've been paid by. No one
else has. But when the time comes we'll have our lawyers breathing down their necks!" WHEEHAW. Interview by Nicholas Bouchard.

THE BOB
SEPT 1987
VIPERS - YOU'RE DOIN' IT WELL 7"

It's been two long years since the group's debut LP. The delay was mostly caused by the death of the band's manager, but they're back with an interim single on Midnight (I suppose the band is shopping the LP around.) No mere vinyl filler these -- "You're doin it well" is loud , brash, and sounds like some lost gem -- with the swagger of vintage Yardbirds and snarl of the best 60's punk outfit. Totally retro, totally now.

VIPERS --
REFLEX April 1988

.....The Vipers have a garage mod brand of rock that's made them popular around the local scene. They are full of melody and boy-girl lyrics. They have great stage presence, partly because the members are tall, but mostly because they know how to generate fun and get a crowd to shake. None of the Vipers made any mistakes, but at one point the tambourine fell all apart, and it was fun to see all those little cymbals flying about while the band chuckled. The Vipers are a fun night out....(REVIEW OF LIVE SHOW by Ian Tyler.)
